Previously, on Avatar...

Earth. Water. Fire. Air.

Long ago, the four nations lived in harmony; then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. For a hundred yers, the world was embroiled in war until the Earth Kingdom, Water Tribes, and defectors from the Fire Nation banded together and stopped the Fire Lord’s march of conquest. In collaboration with the other nations, his son, the new Fire Lord, signed a peace treaty and worked ceaselessly with the other leaders to repair international relationships and build trusts.

After several years, they founded a sovereign state meant to symbolise the recreation of harmony. They called it The United Republic of Nations, and its capital they called Republic City; it was a thriving society where benders and nonbenders from all nations could co-exist in peace.

Or, at least, it was meant to be...

Presently...

After the uprising of a militant nonbender group known as the Equalists was quashed by the Republic City Police Department, the citiens of Republic City had hoped to start anew, rebuilding their lives and friendships from the bits of rubble and broken trusts.

But what the Equalists started could not be undone. After almost a century of relative peace after the Hundred Years war, summer of 172 AG finds Republic City on the brink of civil conflict. On one side, the Traditionalists strive to preserve history and the status quo, maintaining that those capable of bending the elements should be recognised throughout society for their unique abilities. On the other, the Reformists strive to dismantle this hierarchy and call attention to the negative conditions that tradition has created for the majority of citizens: nonbenders. Protests marches are a regular occurrence, and the newspapers always have at least one story of bender-versus-nonbender fighting in any given issue.

Now, a prominent Reformist activist has been kidnapped and murdered, sparking outrage as the Republic City PD is unable to find the perpetrator(s?) of this heinous crime. The leaders of the Traditionalist movement maintain their collective innocence, insisting that these actions were that of an isolated person or persons unaffiliated with them or their ideals. Reformists are unmoved by their declarations, clamouring for justice and legislative action.

Can the city come together and maintain the harmony on which the United Republic was founded? Or will Republic City fall into the chaos of war once more?

The city is on a PRECIPICE, a proverbial powder keg, just waiting for the right spark. Will you be the one to ignite the flames?

The Factions

Traditionalists: are a political group keen on upholding the status quo; bending is a unique ability not bestowed on everyone, and thus benders should enjoy being recognised for it in all aspects of society, whether through preferential treatment, bending-only activities (eg: Probending), or general prestige. Avatars in particular are an aspiration for all bending-capable traditionalists, and are revered by all traditionalists. Nonbenders may align with Traditionalists as well, if they agree that bending ability should come with prestige and special consideration in day to day life since they are capable of controlling forces of nature.

Reformists: are a political group eager to dismantle the status quo; bending is unique, but should be treated as other inherent talents such as a proclivity to drawing, martial arts, or academics. They oppose the preferential treatment that benders receive, and strive to call attention on the negative impacts these aggressions have on nonbenders, such as being passed over for job opportunities in favour of benders, increased housing costs due to lack of bending status, exclusion from the only established professional sport in the nation by design. Benders may align with Reformists as well, if they agree their abilities should not be a basis for preferential treatment.

Lore

Avatar: is an honourific title for any learned bender who is proficient in the ways of all four elements — its martial arts, as well as its philosphoy and teachings — though they themselves can only bend a single element. An avatar has incorporated total harmony of all four elements’ styles into their native element, showing flexibility and unity between forms. Avatars are few and far between, mostly middle age or older, and thus enjoy much public renown, financial prosperity, and societal privilege.

Bending: all four elements — earth, water, fire, air — can manifest in a person as the ability to manipulate and control a specific element. Excepting airbending, all benders must have inherited their ability genetically somewhere along their family tree. It would be nearly impossible for a bender to manifest a bending ability has no presence in their geneological history. Airbending, on the other hand, has reserfaced amongst people previously considered nonbenders with high spirituality / spiritual belief. As such, airbending tends to manifest in later years, unlike any other bending ability, once an individual&rsqu;s belief system has solidified.

Other Nations: outside of the United Republic / Republic City are the Air Nomads, Fire Nation, Earth Kingdom, and Water Tribes. Not much is known at the present about the structure of the other nations, though they have open immigration policies with the United Republic of Nations.
